The uilleann pipes are one of the most expressive, and most challenging, traditional Irish instruments to master.

They are made up of a bellows, an air bag, a melody pipe called the chanter, a set of regulator pipes for chords and rhythm, and three drone pipes.

Dicky Deegan’s Uilleann Pipes has been designed to make them feel natural to play from a keyboard while preserving the character and performance techniques of the real instrument.

The library includes two chanters with realistic legato, a full set of regulators including the rare bass regulator for left hand accompaniment, and three drone pipes.

The drones can be used just like the real instrument by toggling them on and off, or they can be played directly.

What’s Included

Chanter

The chanter is the main melody pipe of the instrument. The library includes two chanters, in D and C♯, mapped across the upper range of the keyboard. Overlapping notes trigger legato transitions, while the retrigger function makes trills and ornaments easy to perform. The gliss control (CC64 by default) produces natural formant-correct slides, and velocity recreates the sound of playing on or off the knee. The pitch wheel can be used for expressive note bends.

Regulators

The regulators provide chordal accompaniment and rhythmic backing. For the most authentic sound, play wide triads, as each regulator pipe can produce only one note at a time. Where the real instrument allows the same note to be played on different pipes, those subtle variations have been sampled and mapped across different velocities.

Drones

The three drone pipes can be switched on or off individually, just like the real instrument. Each drone has its own velocity-sensitive keyswitch to help prevent accidental triggering on DAW playback. Play a velocity below 64 to enable a drone, or above 64 to disable it. If preferred, the latching behaviour can be turned off from the interface.

Does it work in Pro Tools?

Yes. The instruments runs in the free Rhapsody Player which is available as an AAX plugin for use in Pro Tools.

Does it work in FL Studio?

Yes, but FL Studio occasionally brings up unique issues.

If you run into any problems in FL Studio there are two things you can try straight away.

  • Firstly, make sure you are using an audio buffer size that is a power of two: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc.
  • Secondly, enable FL Studio’s align tick lengths option. You can find this in Options > Audio Settings > CPU > Align Tick Lengths.

How do I install it?

The instrument runs within the free Rhapsody Player.

Simply download and install Rhapsody, and download all the .hr files for the instrument – there might just be one file or there could be multiple, it varies by instrument. The files are numbered so you know how many there are.

Next launch the Rhapsody standalone app, then click the + button and follow the on-screen instructions to install the instrument.
